There are roughly two thousand lakes in the Masurian district of northeastern Poland, and about forty-five miles of them are joined into one navigable chain running from Węgorzewo in the north down through Giżycko and Mikołajki to Ruciane-Nida. Only that chain matters for this trip. A house on any of the other lakes is a house on a pond, pretty and closed off. A house on the chain means you untie in the morning and reach a different town by lunch.
August is the only month the water is genuinely warm, around 70F to 72F in the surface layer of the big lakes, and Poland knows this. Warsaw and Gdańsk empty into Masuria for four weeks and the country books it for itself long before anyone abroad has thought about next summer. That is why you book a trip to masuria most of a year ahead: not because the region is crowded in some vague sense, but because a specific, countable thing, a house with its own jetty on the navigable water in August, exists in the low hundreds and is spoken for in autumn.
The price above is for seven nights, Saturday to Saturday, house and boat together, based on four adults sharing. Two people in the same house pay more per head because the house does not get smaller.

- The mooring is what runs out, not the house. Private jetty houses on the Węgorzewo to Mikołajki chain release their following-summer calendars between the second week of October and the first week of November, and the August Saturdays go in roughly eleven days; by February what remains on the water is late June, the last week of August, and houses set back from the shore with a shared town jetty three to six minutes' walk away. Fallback is a September stay, when the water sits near 63F and the same house costs about a third less, or an inland house with a berth rented by the week at the municipal marina in Giżycko.

What the water actually looks like from a small boat
The chain is shallow. Śniardwy, the largest lake in Poland at about forty-four square miles, averages roughly twenty feet deep and has a hard bottom with stone fields marked by buoys, which is why local boats stay in the marked lane across it rather than cutting the diagonal. It is also wide enough that a west wind builds a short, steep chop within an hour, and an open ten-horsepower boat crossing four miles of it in that chop is a slow, wet, two-hour business rather than a forty-minute one. Most weeks you get two or three days when the crossing is flat and several when it is not.
North of Giżycko the character changes completely. Kisajno and Dargin are narrower, held between low banks, and the runs between them are sheltered enough that wind hardly registers. Locks join the sections: Guzianka near Ruciane-Nida is the one everybody meets, a single chamber lifting about six feet, and in the first half of August the wait there can run past ninety minutes in the middle of the day. Going through at seven in the morning takes ten minutes.
The Krutynia is a separate thing again, a slow river through the Piska district that you paddle rather than motor, clear enough to read the bottom in most stretches, with a current that does the work for you going downstream. The half-day included here covers the middle section. People who want the full seventeen-stage descent should say so at first contact, because it is a different booking with its own beds.
The autumn calendar, and the order things go
Owners of the jetty houses put the following summer's dates out in a cluster after the season closes, most of them between the second week of October and the first week of November. There is no single release day and no list to join. What happens in practice is that the same Polish families take the same weeks again, then what they release goes in about a week and a half. The boats are a separate constraint on top: a house may still be free in March with no boat left to hold with it, because the rental fleets in Giżycko and Mikołajki are finite and the good weeks are reserved against houses in the same autumn wave.
We start work on August houses in the last week of September, which means a first message in September gives us the widest field. A first message in April is not wasted, but it is a different conversation about September stays and inland houses.
