Eighteen months or more

seven nights on a capped island in lake superior

Reserve Isle Royale two winters ahead, because the lodge and the boat both fill before the ice is out

The park is open roughly mid April to the end of October and closed the rest of the year, and the sixty or so lodge rooms are spoken for within days of release, which is why we tell people to reserve Isle Royale two winters ahead.

Seven nights, from $3,540 per person.

Booking here means this office places the reservation with the company that runs the trip. Nothing is paid to us, no card is held, and there is no checkout anywhere on this site.

The request form takes bookings 24/7 and keeps no closing time. A person opens what arrives before the working day ends.

Isle Royale takes fewer visitors in a year than Yellowstone takes on a good day in July. The figure moves between about sixteen and twenty five thousand, and it is small for a reason that has nothing to do with obscurity: the island is forty five miles long, sits fifty six miles off the Michigan mainland in Lake Superior, has no road on it, and closes completely from the beginning of November to the middle of April. There is one lodge. There is one store. When the last boat leaves in October the whole place shuts and the staff go home.

That is the arithmetic behind our advice to reserve Isle Royale two winters ahead. Sixty rooms and twenty cottages at Rock Harbor is the entire roofed capacity of a national park the size of a small county, and they are released for one season at a time. The boat is the second cap and it is tighter than people expect: the crossing from Houghton takes about six hours and runs a few days a week, and the seaplane out of Houghton County airport carries a handful of passengers per flight and cancels for fog, which Superior manufactures freely in June.

Most of our clients come to us after trying to do it themselves eight months out and finding nothing but the second week of May. We build the trip backward from the release date instead.

Notice
Eighteen months or more, the book opens once
How far ahead
Eighteen to twenty four months, counted in reservation seasons rather than weeks, because the lodge takes reservations for one season at a time and the release happens once.
What has to be reserved first
The lodge rooms at Rock Harbor go first: sixty rooms and twenty housekeeping cottages for the whole island, released in a single block in late fall for the season after next, and the July and August weeks with a Wednesday or Saturday boat attached are gone inside the first week, often the first two days. Come in March for that August and what is left is early May, when the water is around forty degrees, the boat is on the reduced spring timetable and about a third of the trails are still under snowmelt. The fallback is a late September week, which we can usually still find eleven months out, with the understanding that the last boat of the season sails in the third week of October and the lodge closes before it.

Shape of it
boat or seaplane, then on foot
What is in the figure
Seven nights in a lodge room or housekeeping cottage at Rock Harbor; round trip passage from Houghton or Copper Harbor, Michigan, by scheduled boat, or one way by seaplane where seats exist; park entrance fee for seven days; two guided day walks with an island naturalist, arranged locally; a two night pre and post stay in Houghton because the boat leaves early and the connection cannot be made in a day; luggage transfer to the dock; a written day by day plan with tide free but wind dependent alternates for each walking day.
What is not
Flights to Michigan and any onward domestic connection; the seaplane surcharge when both legs are flown rather than one; meals other than the ones named in your plan, including all lunches carried onto the trail; alcohol; the water taxi to Daisy Farm, Chippewa Harbor or McCargoe Cove, which is reserved on the island and paid there; canoe and kayak rental; backcountry camping permits if you add nights outside the lodge; laundry at Rock Harbor; anything bought at the single store on the island; gratuities; rebooking costs if the boat is held for weather, which happens and is not refunded by the operator; personal equipment, boots and rain gear.
Who it does not suit
Anyone who cannot commit to a specific week twenty months out and hold it, since the lodge block is nonrefundable inside ninety days and there is no way to move a room to another week once the season is sold. Anyone who needs to reach the mainland on a fixed day: the boat is held for wind two or three times a season and passengers wait a day or two. Anyone unwilling to walk, since there are no roads and no vehicles on the island and every distance from the lodge is covered on foot or by water taxi.

Rock to water, and how far your legs actually take you

The island is a spine of ridges running southwest to northeast, and the walking follows them. The Greenstone Ridge Trail covers about forty miles end to end along the high ground and takes four to five days for a through walk with a pack. From the lodge you are not doing that. What you are doing is a set of out and back days from Rock Harbor: Scoville Point is a four mile loop over rock shelf and root, Suzy's Cave is about four miles round trip, Mount Franklin is roughly eight miles with something near five hundred feet of ascent spread thin, and Lookout Louise, which is the best long view on the east end, needs a water taxi across Tobin Harbor first because the land route around adds ten miles.

Surfaces are the thing nobody warns about. Wet basalt takes on a slick when it rains and there are stretches of boardwalk over low ground that are older than they look. Daily distances of six to nine miles are normal for our clients and take longer than the same distance elsewhere.

Water temperature in Superior sits in the forties through June and reaches the upper fifties in a warm August near shore. Air can be seventy five one afternoon and forty eight with fog the next morning. Moose are on the island in the hundreds and wolves in the low dozens; you will hear about both and probably see neither.

The release, and the order things vanish in

The lodge opens its book for one whole season in a single block in late fall, roughly two years before the summer you want. That is the day. Everything else on this trip can be assembled later; that cannot.

Boat sailings for the season are published in winter and the Wednesday and Saturday departures pair best with a seven night stay, which is exactly why they clear first. Seaplane seats are bookable earlier but there are very few of them, and we treat a flown leg as a bonus rather than a plan.

Twenty two months out
lodge block opens; every July and August week available for about forty eight hours
Eighteen months out
August and the first half of September gone; late June holding
Twelve months out
boat schedule published; the good departure days on remaining weeks fill within a month
Nine months out
late September and early October rooms only, and the season's last boat is already in view
Five months out
early to mid May, cold water, reduced sailings, trails still soft
Ninety days out
lodge balance nonrefundable; no week to week transfers

From your first message to a confirmed island week

We do not quote a package and wait. Because the release is a fixed date, the work happens in two bursts: a long slow one before the book opens, and a short sharp one on the day it does.

  1. First messagewe read it the same working day and tell you which two seasons are actually reachable from where you are standing
  2. Written figuretwo to four working days, with the room type, the crossing, and the mainland nights costed separately so you can see what the boat is worth
  3. Standing instructionyou tell us the week, the second choice week and the ceiling, in writing, and we hold it until the lodge opens its book
  4. Release daywe submit at opening, confirm within the hour, and only then build the boat, the mainland nights and the walking plan around the room we got

Ask us which season is still open

Tell us the summer you have in mind and how much walking you want in a day, and we will tell you plainly whether that summer is still reachable or whether you are looking at the one after it. If it is the one after it, that is worth knowing now rather than in March.

Sending this reserves nothing and holds no number. Requests reach this form 24/7. It has no closing time to keep.

A person opens this, looked at before the working day ends. Pricing it against your own dates is slower and runs to two to four working days, because a second company answers on a clock this desk does not control. Card details are wanted at no point, here or later.
