Bornholm sits about ninety-five miles east of the Danish mainland and roughly twenty-two miles off the Swedish coast at Ystad, which is why the practical route from Copenhagen runs east across Sweden and back out to sea. The fast crossing from Ystad to Ronne takes about eighty minutes. The island is twenty-three miles across at its widest and the coast road, if you rode all of it without stopping, is near ninety miles. Six nights is the right length. Four is not.
People book a short notice trip to bornholm for one reason: the stock moves weekly and it moves visibly. Cottages here are let Saturday to Saturday by a few hundred private owners through island letting offices, and when a family drops out in the third week of June, that cottage reappears eleven days later at full price with nobody in it. That is the opening we work. It is not a discount and we never present it as one. It is simply a house that became empty on a fixed day.
What you cannot do at three weeks is pick. Gudhjem, Svaneke and Sandvig are the three coastal villages everybody names, and their rentals are spoken for in high summer by February. What the desk confirms in August, for August, is usually Listed, Tejn, Arnager, Snogebaek or somewhere on the Melsted stretch, and honestly those are better places to sleep than to photograph.

- The bottleneck is not the flight and not the ferry; it is a Saturday-to-Saturday cottage within a mile of the water on the north or east coast, of which the island holds a few hundred and which are released as cancellations, one at a time, with no schedule at all. What frees up does so eleven to twenty-five days before arrival, and the good ones are gone inside a day because the same stock is watched by German and Danish families holding the same weeks. Come at fourteen days and what is left is inland, near Aakirkeby or the middle of the island, thirty to fifty minutes by bicycle from any coast. The fallback is real and we use it often: a two-center split, three nights inland and three nights coastal in two separate rentals, or a Wednesday-to-Wednesday cottage, which competes with almost nobody and costs less.

Also unsuited if you cannot ride sixteen to twenty-two miles in a day on rolling ground with headwind off open water, if you want a car for the six days, or if you need Saturday arrival specifically and will not consider Wednesday.
Granite in the north, sand in the south, and a wind that does not care which
The island splits geologically about a third of the way down. North of a line running roughly from Ronne to Nexo you get granite: the coast at Helligdomsklipperne rises in cliffs to around a hundred feet straight out of the water, the paths along the top are rock and root, and the swimming is off ledges rather than beach. South of that line the ground turns to sand, and Dueodde in the southeast has the finest of it in Denmark, a beach two miles long where the grains are fine enough that they were once used in hourglasses.
Riding is flat to rolling and nobody should oversell the climbs. The highest ground on the island, Rytterknaegten, is 531 feet. But the old rail beds that carry most of the cycle routes are dead flat and the coast road is the opposite: short pitches in and out of every fishing harbor, five or six of them between Gudhjem and Svaneke, none long, all of them at the end of a day. Surfaces are good asphalt on the numbered routes and compacted gravel on the rail beds, with two or three miles of loose sand behind Dueodde that most people walk.
The wind is the real terrain. It comes off open Baltic water from the west and southwest most of the summer, and a westerly means the ride from Ronne up to Sandvig is easy and the return is not. We route the week counterclockwise for that reason and tell you where the sheltered inland lanes through Almindingen run parallel if the day turns.
The Saturday clock, and what has already gone by each month
The letting year has a shape you can set your watch by. Danish and German families take the school weeks of late June through mid-August between January and March. Everything else is a cancellation. That means the calendar below is not about when to plan; it is about what the desk can still find.
