The airfare part, and who prices it

Every trip in this catalog is filed by how much notice it needs, and every figure is a from-price before the airfare is set against your dates. The airfare is the one part of a trip this desk does not price. This page explains what happens instead.

There is nothing to buy on this page, and it names no fare at all.

The request form takes bookings 24/7 and keeps no closing time. A person opens what arrives before the working day ends.

Why this one leg is handed over

The catalog is sorted by a single question: how long before departure does the book open. Some trips need three weeks. Some need eighteen months, because one boat, one guide or one permit sets the whole calendar and everything else waits on it.

Airfare answers no such question. A scheduled seat opens on the airline's own timetable, it is the same seat for everyone aboard, and no amount of notice given to this desk changes what it costs. It is the one component where a person in an office adds nothing at all.

So it gets a box, and an honest account of who receives what the box sends.

What the box says back to you

Put an outbound date in and a sentence forms beneath the fields. It reports neither the parameter nor the fare, but the one measurement every page here is organized around: distance in days.

24 days from today
inside A few weeks out: you take what is still open
112 days from today
inside Three to five months, the window most trips here are built for
300 days from today
inside Eight to twelve months, where one component sets the date

That readback is not decoration. A date that suits an airline may sit in a tier where the rest of the trip cannot be assembled, and the fare box is the first place in a visit where a real date gets typed. Better to say so there than to let it be discovered later by the desk.

What actually travels, character by character

A return from Greensboro to Lisbon in September, business class, two people, comes out as GSO1509LIS2409c200. It is not a sentence and never was: it is eighteen slots, each fixed in width, read strictly by position.

Slots 1 to 3
GSO, the airport it starts at
Slots 4 to 7
1509, written day first: the fifteenth, in month nine
Slots 8 to 10
LIS, the airport it finishes at
Slots 11 to 14
2409, the return, in the same day-first order
Slot 15
c, the seat
Slot 16
2, how many hold a seat of their own
Slot 17
0, how many are aged two to eleven
Slot 18
0, how many are under two and traveling on a lap

One slot is neither an airport nor a calendar. It takes four values and nothing else:

empty
Economy
w
Premium economy
c
Business class
f
First class

Drop the return and slots 11 to 14 vanish, leaving thirteen. There is no eighteenth-and-a-half slot for anything unlisted, which is the part worth finding reassuring.

Who is on the far end

Not this desk. The column below never changes sides.

Who produces the figure
A booking company, out of its own systems, live at the second you ask
Who is holding the seat
That same company
Who handles the card
That company, on its own pages. There is no field anywhere on this site built to receive card digits
Which conditions the ticket is issued under
Theirs. Those are binding. Nothing published here is
Who can alter a booking later
Them, not this desk, and this desk will not imply otherwise
What comes back to this office
A portion of a margin they had already set, and only if a booking happens
What that does to your total
It is added to nothing. Your figure was settled before anyone knew which page you came in from

What never leaves your machine

One file of airport names comes down while the page is still opening, and after that the network is finished with. Matching what you type, ranking the offers, counting the days to your tier, assembling the eighteen slots: all of it is done by the machine in front of you.

Your name
There is no field for it
An address to reply to
None
A telephone number
None
Anything you wrote into the request form further down the page
Belongs to that form and reaches only this desk. The two share a roof and nothing else
The first moment anything is transmitted
When you press the button, and not before

A city you began typing and thought better of is never sent anywhere.

Where the box refuses

Before the script has loaded the button is inert, and it looks inert rather than pretending otherwise. Hand the far end a string it cannot parse and what comes back is a blank page, which tells a reader less than a plain refusal would.

Seven ways it declines, and each prints beside the field responsible rather than by the button. An airport typed out in full but never chosen from the list, because slots 1 to 3 will carry a real code or nothing. Departure and arrival matching. A departure already behind us. A return earlier than the departure, which the field resolves by emptying itself the moment the departure overtakes it. Ten or more in seats. A lap infant with nobody seated to hold them. Anything beyond eleven months.

The tier this box cannot reach

Count the calendar slots again: four apiece, spent entirely on a day and a month, with none at all for the year.

Inside twelve months that costs nothing, since only one September can be meant. Push past it and the slots turn ambiguous rather than wrong: ask about a date sixteen months out and the near September is assumed, live figures arrive for it, and nothing on the screen mentions that the year was chosen for you. Eleven months is the last point at which four slots have one reading, so that is where the box stops.

Which leaves a gap worth naming rather than hiding. Eighteen months or more is a real tier on this site, and it is the tier where the operating company's release date, not the airfare, sets everything. A box that reaches eleven months cannot look at it. For those trips the sequence runs the other way round: the desk secures the component that opens first, and the airfare is priced later, inside the window where a parameter like this one can still be read.

Two things it does not do

It does not quote. Airfare is not included in any figure printed in this catalog, and this page names no fare at all.

And it does not get you onto a trip. The moment a departure waits on a release date, a minimum number or a permit, a field has run out of anything useful to say and the desk has barely started.
